a small hello from an old telescope

I grew up down by the sea in an old lookout tower
collecting shells and looking out at the mysterious sea
from an old telescope ..

Here are some words I wrote for a show I did recently at HA gallery in Portland OR.

This was on the wall next to my art *)

' I grew up down by the sea in an old lookout tower. My mother was a librarian and teacher who liked to paint and collect shells and rocks by the side of the road. She was also a master at creating themed costumed parties and having film nights with an old reel to reel projector. My father was a splendid storyteller and enjoyed taking the family on field trips and adventures.

My older brother's love of surreal old films and painting miniatures for dioramas intrigued me.

He and I would sometimes spend hours in the very top of the slanted tower,

looking out at sea through the old telescope for lost ships and submarines.

These whimsical memories are a few of the things that have kept my imagination inspired.

I was captivated by the dark sea, lost ghosts and invisible communications.

It is in the language of art that I have found the mystery of these things that linger on.'

And something inspiring my brother and I would watch often when we were kids ..

Here's Truly Scrumptious ..
